Huawei Mate 90 could finally get long-overdue security feature

Huawei is currently rejoicing over the strong demand for its newly launched Pura smartphones in the market, though at the same time, it began preparing the next flagship of this year – the Mate 90 series, with probably a long-overdue security feature.

Some leaks and rumors flowing for the Huawei Mate 90 series months before the expected launch timeline reported that the lineup can finally bring the most-awaited biometric security feature – an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

If true, it would eventually be a goodbye to the side-mounted fingerprint sensor that has been relying on the performance-based Mate phones for a couple of years.

The Mate 20 series phones debuted in 2018 with a rear-mounted capacitive fingerprint sensor, which is located on the back of the device below the camera module.

Hereafter, Huawei started integrating an optical under-display fingerprint sensor for every Mate series – from Mate 30/Pro to Mate 60 handsets. Things were expected to move on to the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner technology. But it didn’t happen.

In 2024, Huawei unveiled the Mate 70 series with the side-fingerprint sensor. While consumers expected changes with the Mate 80 phones, the OEM didn’t make any shifts in this aspect.

The tech giant even applied for an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, hinting that it will soon use the respective technology for its flagship phones. Though there is no official response on this matter to date!

Both side-mounted and ultrasonic fingerprint sensors have their own Pros and Cons. For instance, the former operates fast, works well regardless of the screen protectors, and remains at the sides without giving any tension related to the display.

On the flip side, ultrasonic fingerprint sensors scan a 3D image of your finger, including all ridges, valleys, and pores. They are reliable even if your finger is wet, dirty, or greasy, and are capable of scanning the skin’s dermal layer.

In the current landscape, the Huawei Mate 90 series is in rumors to finally bring this tech feature on board. But an official confirmation awaits this subject.
