Huawei Mate 90 series will not only unlock a new chip breakthrough this year but could also take photography to the next level with add-on zoom camera technology or “external teleconverters”. The specific imaging solution claims to deliver iconic macro shots without compromising the image quality.
Weibo tipster @FixedFocus reported that Huawei is planning to introduce teleconverters or additional zoom camera tech with the upcoming flagship – the Mate 90 series.
The tipster mentioned that Huawei has changed manufacturers for external teleconverters. These expected super zoom sensors may undergo bigger changes this time.
Unlike many other Mate models, including the Mate 80 phones, the Mate 90 series will likely adopt a different appearance to enhance the mobile photography experience.
Add-on zoom sensors or teleconverters refer to a special lens that one can attach or mount directly over the phone’s original camera setup – specifically on the telephoto lens. As a result, it extends the optical zoom range by multiplying the focal length of the existing zoom lens.

Smartphone users with a teleconverter or external zoom lens can efficiently capture distant subjects such as music concerts without sacrificing sharpness or details of the image. It is due to the additional 200mm or even 40mm equivalent focal length.
Huawei tried to adopt a similar concept with the first high-end Pura phone – the Pura 70 Ultra. It was generally a retractable lens that popped out while capturing in-motion or distant shots.
Whether the company will implement the same imaging technology in the Mate 90 or use a different approach is unclear at the moment. Though it looks like Huawei is preparing major camera solutions for its future flagship smartphones.
