Huawei Mate X8 will likely debut alongside the Mate 90 smartphones this year, and the flagship foldable is expected to undergo surprising design and hinge upgrades. The company can significantly make changes to the device’s folding mechanism.
Weibo tipster @FixedFocus noted that the Huawei Mate X8 foldable could adopt a prominent design and hinge changes this time. But these shifts are unclear for now.
The tipster mentioned that the Chinese tech giant is planning to advance the hinge materials to elevate the durability aspect of the device – a big concern for consumers.
A hinge is the most unguarded part of a foldable. Constant opening + closing or wear and tear conditions on the device can affect its longevity, while incurring repair costs.
Perhaps Huawei is planning to implement new materials in its single-hinge technology that will enhance the durability and strengthen the foldable’s potential to withstand repeated folding and unfolding or other external risks like falls or tears.

For comparison, the Huawei Mate X7 uses an all-new Basalt Waterdrop Hinge technology, which has ultra-strong rocket steel as core components. Thus, it provides a larger screen enclosure and enhanced protection to the entire foldable.
Next comes the design! While the book-type fold device has a lot of time to go official in the market, sketches and leaks regarding its looks have already started surfacing online. One of them suggested major camera bump changes for Mate X8.
The company has worked on a hexagonal and star-cut camera look for the previous-generation Mate foldables. But this time, it may feature a squarish lens frame.
