Huawei Nova 16 series smartphones bring many features that deliver a new experience to users, and one such capability is the enhanced Smart Grip. The corresponding “smart tool” debuted last year and is now reaching several compatible handsets.
In November 2025, Huawei introduced the Smart Grip feature with the top-tier models – the Mate 80 series and the Mate X7 foldable. Now it has brought an enhanced avatar of this tool for the newly launched Nova 16 models.
All Huawei Nova 16 series models support the Smart Grip feature. It is one of the best additions in Huawei phones, particularly for those who want to operate their phones in one-handed mode.
Smart Grip feature uses the HarmonyOS intelligent perception engine. This system helps the capability to auto-identify the user’s left and right hand grip on the phone.
The user’s grip here works as a command for the corresponding feature and allows the handset to easily understand the operation needs of the owner accordingly.

Huawei has introduced this feature to ease call management, especially on big-screen phones. Often, call notifications appear right at the top of the display while working on any other application. In case one hand is busy with something, it becomes difficult to reach the call buttons with the other one.
But with Smart Grip, the feature immediately identifies your thumb’s grip irrespective of the left or right side and brings a call banner along with its red and green buttons.
And in the latest edition, the company has further enhanced its feature by expanding to around 100 applications. It covers scenarios like answering calls, liking + saving, commenting, quick shopping, interacting, and creating new schedules.
Note that you should not shake the phone aggressively during calls, as this action could affect the Smart Grip’s function or cause it to switch incorrectly to the left or right side.
