US is once again up with the efforts of the “Huawei ban“, this time in NATO countries for its 5G tech solutions. And to do so, the Trump administration is forcing allies to use defense funds and replace China-made components from their network frame.
Huawei and other Chinese tech giants like ZTE are always seen as a risk to the users’ privacy and data security. American has already phased out these firms from its network infrastructure years ago.
But some countries like Germany and Spain still significantly rely on Huawei and its 5G network solutions. And of course, Trump wants to remove the firm completely.
Now, the US is calling NATO countries to follow suit and ban Huawei 5G in their network market. If they are unable to do so, they can use the defense spending here.
NATO countries increased their spending on defense from 1.5% to 3.5% of their GDP to meet Trump’s demand of investing a larger share of the alliance costs in their militaries. But changes are heading once again on this matter.
Joshua Young – one of the US State Department’s China coordinators stated in May that NATO allies should use defense-based funding to rip out Huawei gear and replace it with other eligible companies’ products. It was mainly referred to Germany.
Germany and Spain opposed the EU’s plan to ban Chinese network vendors, as they not only bring efficient 5G solutions, but also the fact that their removal can cost a lot! Although if they don’t follow the rules, the authorities will impose major fines.
Huawei 5G technology is considered better than Ericsson’s and Nokia’s in many aspects. Though the only reason behind its removal is “security risk” allegations. What else comes in the middle of this topic is worth looking at.
