Apple’s first foldable is coming this year, and this creation may pressure the top tech players in the folding phone market – Huawei and Samsung, as per a new report. The iPhone maker’s entry into the fold segment will not only fuel the market’s growth but also intensify competition.
TrendForce has recently published a report saying that Apple’s arrival in the foldable market can impact the current market positions of brands like Huawei and Samsung.
iPhone Ultra is expected to debut in September this year. Huawei will likely launch its Mate XT 2 tri-fold at the same time. But this time, Apple’s first-ever creation can take center stage, pushing the triple-folding smartphone to the backstage.
Being Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Ultra will likely garner more traction than any other launch during the same period, as happened with Huawei’s Mate XT.
Report reveals that Apple can capture 19.3% of the market share right after its foldable launch. If true, this will suppress Samsung to 30.1%, which was on the 40% mark last year. Meanwhile, Huawei could slip to a 29.3% market share.
The report further states that the competition level is now shifting from only mechanical upgrades to material science. In other words, users are looking for more “crease-free” folding phones instead of durability or camera upgrades. The report says:
“Competition is now moving towards materials science, where the ultimate goal is no longer simply to fold, but to make the crease disappear as it has become a core metric of display technology integration.”
