Huawei begins testing eSIM capability for Mate 90 models

Huawei is testing eSIM tech capability for the upcoming Mate 90 series. The company introduced the first eSIM-based smartphone last year in November. Now it is preparing to bring the same solution with more advancements to the 2026 Mate flagship.

According to the Weibo tipster @SmartPikachu, Huawei has started testing the eSIM capability for the Mate 90 series. Whether the company will keep this feature exclusive to the high-end models or bring it to all variants is unclear at present.

The tech giant introduced eSIM technology to the Mate 80 RS Ultimate. It was the first and only smartphone in the Huawei family last year to use a dual-eSIM setup.

Dual-eSIM setup includes two physical SIM cards and two eSIMs. Together, this combination supports a maximum of four numbers and lets you use two numbers at the same time. It makes the phone thinner and lighter and avoids physical SIM concerns.

Huawei says that eSIM is the advanced avatar of the physical SIM card, which enables users to easily activate a mobile network with voice calls, SMS, data access, and more.

Apart from the Mate 80 RS, the company has used the combination of two physical SIM cards and eSIM cards for the Pura X Max and Pura 90 Pro Max.

Now the phone maker is readying a similar yet enhanced setup for the Mate 90 series. In terms of models, Huawei could integrate the eSIM technology into the RS Ultimate Design and the Pro Max variants. Whereas the base and Pro models can rely on the physical SIM cards.

Mate 90 series will introduce various meaningful upgrades and surprises over its predecessors. From the imaging system to chip performance, Huawei is evaluating crucial components for the upcoming lineup. Perhaps things will come to light in September.
