Huawei is one of the best tech vendors when it comes to the storage segment but one point where it and China both lag is the HDD – Hard Disk Drive. A senior official has shared his views on how HDDs play a vital role in the growth of the country.
Zhou Yuefeng – Huawei Senior Vice President, CEO of Huawei Cloud, and President of Data Storage Product Line, recently had an interview where he revealed how HDD (Hard Disk Drive) production is the only challenge for China in the storage field.
What is HDD? A Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is a traditional storage device that uses spinning magnetic disks called platters to store digital data easily, just like an OS, app, or files. Its major benefit over SSDs is cost-effectiveness and higher storage capabilities.
During the interview, Zhou said the only core component that China’s IT industry hasn’t produced to date is HDD. So far, only three non-Chinese producers in the world can manufacture this storage technology.
Irrespective of this factor, China’s yearly HDD consumption rate continues to touch new heights. It alone gobbles up HDDs worth 60 billion yuan every year.

Zhou added:
“The annual consumption of hard disk drives (HDDs) in the Chinese market alone is close to 60 billion yuan. The lack of this core technology puts our industry in a passive position in the global supply chain.”
Although the chief strongly believes that the storage media should accelerate diversification and initiate a balanced development, making breakthroughs in materials, manufacturing equipment, and processes.
Huawei is still confident regarding the country’s future in the storage tech industry. He adds that China is already a data superpower with an annual data generation double of the 800EB level. Just like 5G, data storage can also become China’s second calling card in the global tech field.
