Huawei scientist warns Nvidia will soon face chip performance limit


Liao Heng, one of the top scientists at Huawei Semiconductor Unit, disclosed a major warning regarding Nvidia and its chip performance limit. According to the executive, the US firm may soon hit hard SoC physical limits due to its technical solutions.

Huawei scientist mentioned that Nvidia can face a chip performance limit in the future. The company is unknowingly yet rapidly approaching a hard phase owing to its goals.

The chief said (via) that Nvidia is picking up pace to develop larger and even more powerful AI semiconductors, integrated with billions of transistors and HBM chipsets.

During an exclusive 5-hour interview on semiconductors, Ascend processing, and other topics, the Huawei scientist revealed the ongoing chip industry’s condition:

“The industry is pushing, but once they cross that physical limit, there will be an avalanche.”

Liao stated that since Moore’s Law is all about endless transistor shrinkage, the chip industry’s focus should shift to dramatically improving data transmission speeds between system components. And this is only possible with the Tau Scaling Law.

Unlike Moore’s Law, the Tau Scaling Law prioritizes reducing signal delays and system latency compared to pure geometric scaling. It is a better alternative design framework than traditional chipmaking principles.

Following this approach, Huawei will launch its first smartphone chip paired with the LogicFolding design concept. Liao says the world will soon see how this method helps narrow the performance gap.

While the US sanctions have restricted Huawei for many years in creative chipmaking solutions, the company has found a way by rethinking the core problem at the system level instead of simply reducing transistor size.
