Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes that while the US has a larger economy than China, the competitor country and Huawei are still far ahead in AI due to their “open-source” approach. This one step will help China become the leader in the AI field.
The CEO of Nvidia said China and Huawei have adopted the open-source move for AI, which the US still lags in. He added that the cutting-edge models in the US are undoubtedly world-class, and they are around six months ahead of everyone.
But most of the 1.4 million AI models worldwide are open source, and China is far ahead in this regard. Without open source, startups cannot grow, universities cannot conduct scientific research, and scientists cannot conduct experiments.
Linux, Kubernetes, and PyTorch are all open-source, and their prosperity in AI is now inseparable. That simply shows whoever applies technology first wins the industrial revolution, and social attitudes will affect the speed of technology application.
Huang added:
“China’s energy production is twice that of the United States. Our economy is larger than theirs, but our energy production is only half. That just doesn’t make sense.”
The CEO further noted that the US has been trying to move the manufacturing world, resulting in the hollowing out of the industrial chain. However, everyone wants to bring its manufacturing back to the US.
According to him, the real question is how the US can build chip factories, assembly plants, and AI data centers without energy, as all these implementations require a lot of energy.
“It’s a fact that we are several generations ahead in chips, but please don’t be complacent. Chips ultimately lead to manufacturing, and no one should question China’s manufacturing capabilities.”
