U.S. authorities have shown a green signal to Nvidia H200 AI chip sales to China but before that, Trump has played a new move that might raise challenges for Chinese clients as well as the US government itself. How? Let’s check the matter.
Donald Trump, the U.S. President, is reviewing the Nvidia H200 AI chip before opening the sales gate to China. The official has called a special inter-agency meeting to probe the entire process ahead of the first shipment to Chinese customers.
The US Commerce Department has also approved the State, Energy and Defense Departments, and other important sectors for the latest AI chip review move.
All these agencies have around 30 days to review the Nvidia H200 chips before exporting them to China. It will be a thorough review, but the final decision falls in Trump’s court. One of the White House spokespersons said:
“…the Trump administration is committed to ensuring the dominance of the American tech stack – without compromising on national security.”
Unlike the Biden administration, which banned all kinds of advanced AI chip exports to China, Trump is allowing the sales for the US’s benefit.
How could this move be an obstacle? Trump permitted the sales while imposing a 25% fee on these transactions. It’ll maintain the competitive line of US firms over Chinese ones and, simultaneously, end demand for China-made chips.
While the step could sound beneficial for the US, it has created a massive buzz among the Commerce Department. The authority still believes that the H200 chip supply will boost China’s military and AI capabilities.
Eventually, Trump’s new move before the Nvidia H200 chip sales to China could weaken the US strength in the AI industry, helping its rival to grow speedily.
Moreover, it’s unclear if the Beijing authority would allow Chinese firms to purchase Nvidia H200 chips, as it has already tagged the company’s product as “risk”.
