Huawei will release a new HarmonyOS update for home storage devices, bringing smarter Gallery control for direct media access to smartphones and other devices.
The HarmonyOS 6 update will be released for this storage device, and the feature in discussion will automatically upload photos and videos from the phone’s gallery to the standalone storage.
Once uploaded, the user can view this uploaded content directly through the Gallery app on the smartphone. Previously, the user would have had to open the AI Life app first to access the cross-device content.
Despite simplifying the process, the feature still relies on the AI Life app to establish the connection between the devices. Therefore, the user will need to update the AI Life, Huawei smartphones/tablets, and the storage device to have the following software versions:
- AI Life App version: 15.1.5.900 and above (Check: AI Life App > Storage > Settings > About)
- Huawei smartphone/tablets: HarmonyOS 6.0.0.115 and above (Check: Settings > About > HarmonyOS version)
- Home storage software version: 6.0.0.9 and above (Check: AI Life app> Storage settings > Settings > System Update
To enable the cross-platform gallery viewing experience, users need to open the AI Life app, go to Home storage, visit Enable Sync and Backup, then enable Gallery and Home Storage Sync.
Once enabled, the storage sync option will appear in the Gallery app’s settings, and the phone will start syncing photos to display on the smartphone/tablet.
Interestingly, the smartphone can show both local and storage media simultaneously. But the user can differentiate between the local and stored photos with a Family Store icon in the image detail, as well as the download button at the top of the image view screen.
Moreover, users can delete the images from the smartphone, and that will also remove them from the storage. This is quite an effective feature for Huawei home storage family users, making photo sharing smarter and efficient.
