Huawei is planning to launch its Ascend AI chip products in Korea next year. The respective country currently relies on Nvidia for its high-quality artificial intelligence chipsets. However, the Chinese OEM aims to bring a second option.
A media reporter attended the Huawei Day 2025 conference today. In the event, Huawei announced some major steps that it will take for Korea’s welfare in 2026.
One of these steps is to launch the latest Huawei Ascend AI chip in Korea. While Nvidia dominates the country, Korea has a growing ecosystem of AI chip players.
For instance, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Hana Micron, Telechips, DI Corp, and more. Nearly 86 semiconductor firms are working on AI chipset design or production in South Korea, and Huawei seems to be making its space among them.
Revealing the “whats” and “hows” on this AI chip subject for South Korea, the CEO of Huawei Korea, Balian Wang, announced at the conference:
“Huawei Korea plans to officially launch AI computing cards and AI data center-related solutions next year. We want to provide Korean companies with a second option other than Nvidia.”
Wang mentioned that the first AI chipset to debut in Korea will be Ascend 950. The CEO added that Huawei aims not to simply offer AI-powered processors in the country but to boost the industrial applications.
And to implement this strategy, the company will probably sell chips in clusters rather than individually, like Nvidia. This move will eventually accelerate competitiveness and offer End-to-End (E2E) solutions that encompass both hardware and software.
The chief added to eliminate the requirement of a partner in supply and sales. It aims to devise a strategy that can enable the company to directly link and service the product to consumers in South Korea. And that’s just the beginning.
After AI chips, Huawei plans to build a new software ecosystem with its self-made open source operating system – HarmonyOS. Balian Wang said:
“HarmonyOS is no longer owned by Huawei, and is now operated and upgraded by open source organizations. It can be used not only in smartphones but also in various smart home devices.”
