Ever wonder why only Huawei and Honor flagship phones feature the 3D Face Recognition tech while other brands haven’t entered this segment yet? Well, an Honor executive responded to this matter, explaining all the aspects of this technology.
3D Facial Recognition technology is a security-based feature. It scans your face, generating a three-dimensional image to verify your identity. Unlike a 2D tech that can be spoofed with a photograph, the new feature is more secure and safer.
While some early phones, like the Google Pixel 4, iPhone X, and more, have this feature, the new models and brands like OPPO, Vivo are still out of this race.
To answer the reason behind why only Huawei and Magic phones have the 3D face recognition tech, Honor R&D engineer – Cao Gong shared a post on his Weibo account.
Cao stated that 3D facial recognition tech is not only about integrating parts to the device, but more than that! It needs special upgrades based on the device’s components.
“This is not simply a matter of stacking components; it requires customized collaborative modifications and upgrades to the chip platform, system, and algorithms.”

Honor executive further said that the company has to customize the image path and operate the environment of the chip platform. The entire process (from image acquisition to image processing and algorithm) requires a secure chip surrounding.
On the flip side, the company has to train massive amounts of data to attain recognition and anti-counterfeiting capabilities. These traits will adapt to global ethnicities and all-weather lighting environments.
Thus, the particular biometric technology requires long-term technological accumulation and massive resource investment.
Weibo tipster @DigitalChatStation revealed that OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi will launch 3D Face Recognition phones by 2027 or 2028. Though things are still uncertain.
