China shows green signal to Nvidia H200 AI chip imports

After months of “security hustles”, China has finally given a green signal to Nvidia H200 AI chip imports in the country. The government allowed three of its most prominent technological companies to purchase high-end AI semiconductors.

US-China tech tensions continue to take new turns, and the latest turn in this world has opened the door of the Chinese market for Nvidia H200 AI chip imports.

This is a major spin as China was restricting its native firms from buying Nvidia chips. The authorities believed that this move would help it reduce the companies’ dependence on the US-based, less efficient products.

But the latest report highlights that China has allowed three major firms, like ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent, to purchase over 400,000 H200 AI chips from Nvidia.

Interestingly, China has only approved the first batch of H200 AI chips. The administration has told the native firms to only purchase these SoCs when necessary.

Meanwhile, other Chinese AI clients are waiting in the queue for a similar approval. Sourced mentioned that China is approving companies based on certain conditions that are currently under wraps.

Sources suggested that China made this move not only to ease tensions with the US but also as Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, is planning an “influential visit” to the country ahead of the Lunar New Year.

As mentioned, China wasn’t in favor of approving H200’s entry into its AI market. That’s why the latest move has appeared as shocking news. It’s probably just the beginning of a new settlement between the US and China.

How this particular move will affect Huawei’s presence in the Chinese AI market is really worth looking forward to!
