US–China tech tensions seem to be cooling down as the latter country has recently opened the doors of its AI market to welcome Nvidia H200 chips, but will this move pose a new challenge for Huawei and its growing AI chipset business? Let’s find out!
China restricted Nvidia from entering its boundaries for two reasons. The first was to reduce the native firms’ reliance on the US technologies and encourage them to go full domestic, contributing to the country’s AI and tech progress!
Another reason – the Chinese authorities believed that the Nvidia H200 is a risky chipset. Previous reports suggested that the US implement a tiny component to this chip that spies on China’s data and can harm the country’s national security.
On the other hand, even the US prohibited Nvidia from selling its chips to the rival country. Though after several hustles and bustles, the deal is finally open!
News revealed that China is welcoming Nvidia AI chips to its boundaries, and here comes the most important part – a new competition for Huawei.
Since Nvidia was out of China, Huawei was free to attract more customers for its AI chips. The Chinese OEM is the only brand to offer efficient AI chips for LLM inference, training processes, and even data centers.
On the other hand, the Beijing authorities mandated local AI chips and products for native firms. As a result, clients like ByteDance, DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Tencent had no other choice but to choose Ascend AI semiconductors for their products.
To sum up, Huawei had a plus point with the exit of Nvidia from its home ground. But since the US chipmaker is ready to come back into the country, the Chinese tech giant may once again face drastic competition in the AI market.
Huawei has new plans to maintain its position in the AI chip industry. It has promised to introduce more powerful Ascend semiconductors by 2028, expanding its AI tech user base to a greater extent. (Check the full roadmap HERE).
Still, it would be a tough showdown between Huawei and Nvidia if the US chipmaker continued to stay in the Chinese AI market.
