DeepSeek can buy Nvidia H200 AI chips, but there’s a catch

After ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent, China has shown a green flag to the leading AI startup – DeepSeek, for purchasing Nvidia H200 AI chips. Although this new move has a big catch and applies certain conditions to the native company.

DeepSeek can now buy Nvidia H200 AI chips, but under some regulatory conditions. These norms are not finalized yet, though the authorities will soon inform about it.

When asked, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, about the new deal with the AI startup DeepSeek, he said that the company hasn’t received any such information yet.

Jensen mentioned that China still seems to be working on the approval part for new chip imports. Perhaps it has yet to finish the licensing work for its companies.

Inputs suggest that China’s industry and commerce ministries allowed all four companies to make a deal with Nvidia for its AI chips. Although before these firms begin ordering H200 processors, the authorities want to apply some conditions.

These conditions would probably be related to China’s national security. At the same time, the government may adopt a criterion of using limited US-based chips while relying primarily on the native AI semiconductors.

After months of discussions on whether Nvidia H200 is really safe for Chinese clients, the country has finally opened the doors for it in its AI market.

However, China has only allowed the first batch of Nvidia AI processors, hinting that it could stop the import if things didn’t appear right in the future. For now, the situation seems to be under control with full rules and regulations.
