Bigger batteries have become the latest “hot topic” for several brands in the market, and it looks like future phones will soon surprise consumers in this segment. But what if we say that this surprise will build upon the removal of a useful feature?
A Weibo tipster recently suggested that many phones in the future will debut with bigger batteries, probably larger than that of Honor. For instance, Samsung is working on 12000mAh and 18000mAh cell packs for its upcoming Galaxy handsets.
However, this step might involve a major twist! Inputs reveal that brands may remove the “Infrared Remote Control” component from the phones to give space to bigger batteries.
The infrared remote control feature is a built-in hardware part, basically a small circular transmitter located at the top edge. It acts as a universal remote to control smart home appliances like TVs, ACs, and set-top boxes.
It is capable of sending invisible infrared light signals to mimic traditional remotes that require specialized applications to operate efficiently. Simply put, it is a backup for lost remotes and can control multiple devices even in public spaces.

Many phone makers believe that the IR Control feature is useless, as it is not used frequently and is even inefficient. Hence, removing the infrared remote control can help them to increase the battery capacity for their future devices.
Sharing his own experience, the tipster said that he himself has used the IR feature 3-5 times a year. Therefore, it won’t be wrong to cut out this tool for batteries.
Notably, Honor Power 2 also features a big battery without the removal of the IR sensor. That means it is still possible to use bigger batteries without any kind of compromise with the phone’s existing components.
