Looks like Huawei and its foreign competitor – Apple are now up with new enhancements for their satellite communication technology. The latter is working to bring direct 5G satellite internet to iPhones this year, while the former may finally launch low-orbit satellite features for its devices.
FixedFocus got some new insights on Huawei and Apple satellite communication technology. The tipster mentioned that the particular tech is going to be one of the biggest highlights this year.
Starting with Apple, the tipster said that the iPhone maker will support NR-NTN in the C2 baseband in 2026, improving satellite connectivity for iPhones.
NR-NTN refers to New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks. It is considered a modem’s ability to support the 5G standard for direct communication between a regular phone and satellites. A device can directly connect to a satellite for the internet.
Inputs suggest that Apple’s next-gen C2 modem will support 5G satellite communication for iPhone 18 Pro series models. It will likely expand into remote areas.
On the other hand, Huawei can finally showcase the low-orbit satellite communication technology this year. The specific tech was in the internal testing phase last year. The company said to begin public beta by the end of 2025.
Perhaps the efficient tech could show up in Huawei flagships this year. As per the tipster, China is progressing more slowly at present in the satellite communication segment, but we may hear good news from Huawei later this year.
Low-orbit satellite communication allows phones to directly connect with satellites, something similar to Apple’s idea. It makes data transmission and voice calls simpler and more convenient.
While a high-orbit satellite communication (used with the Mate 60 Pro) often leads to certain issues in calling + messaging services, the low-orbit with 6G air-ground capabilities ensures lower latency and high coverage density.
Early inputs suggested that Huawei is working with China Star Network to adopt the low-orbit satellite internet. Perhaps things will be official by this year.
