Huawei can rebuild its strong chip technology capabilities if the US does not remain careful, said the Intel CEO, Chen Liwu. While announcing the yearly financial performance, the executive praised Huawei’s progress in the chipset industry.
Intel CEO expressed surprise at the robust Huawei chip tech capabilities despite the tough US restrictions. He also hailed the company’s “open-source” approach in the technology world, saying that the specific move could do wrong to the US.
Chen said that he strongly supports the idea of open-source, especially for chipset-related software and components. At the same time, he cautioned that the U.S. could remain behind China in certain prime areas due to this smart concept.
Speaking of Huawei, the executive said that he didn’t think of Huawei having more than 100 top-talented CPU architects amid the constant tech tensions between the US and China.
The CEO further pointed out that while the Chinese tech giant is unable to access cutting-edge chip-making tools and equipment, it is quietly working on reviving its strong capabilities that have been missing for the past five years.
Chen Liwu said:
“Although Huawei’s architects cannot obtain advanced tools (mainly design software such as EDA) from European and American companies such as Synopsys, they can bypass the restrictions and quietly build capabilities that were previously lacking.”

He added that if the United States is not careful, Chinese tech companies like Huawei may achieve leapfrog development in the chipset industry in the upcoming years.
It’s not the first time that a foreign firm has praised Huawei for its chipset capabilities. NVIDIA has made this step many times, calling Huawei a super-strong rival in the chip technology market.
