Huawei Pura 90 series was in rumors for breaking the Mate’s monopoly in 3D Face Recognition capability this year. But it seems that’s not going to happen anytime soon. Perhaps the flagship lineup will continue featuring a single punch hole layout.
DirectorShiGuan on Weibo said that the Huawei Pura 90 series will not feature the legendary 3D Face Recognition capability. The ultimate tech will remain exclusive to the Mate family.
Many tipsters earlier revealed that the Pura 90 series will finally get access to the 3D facial verification setup. However, the company seemingly has different plans.
The P series sticks to a 2D Face Recognition, offering a 2D mapping and captures facial data through the standard front camera. On the flip side, the Mate models use 3D Face Recognition, which is more secure and can work in dim lights.

For the past two years, Huawei has been in the news for bringing the 3D Facial Recognition technology to its Pura models. Though these inputs may once again prove wrong, the 2026 Pura flagship may continue the same single-hole design.
Unlike the 2D Facial Verification, the 3D technology uses a Time-of-Flight (ToF) 3D camera to capture the fine details as well as the geometric structure of the face for unlocking the device. Due to advanced tech, it easily analyzes depth and contours to prevent security bypasses like using a photo or mask.
Huawei is also reportedly working on an under-display 3D face tech for its future flagships. It is expected to debut this unique technology before Apple in the market. But again, the timeline for this creation is uncertain at present.
