Huawei is reportedly preparing a major surprise with the upcoming Pura 90 Pro models, improving the camera quality with the LOFIC structure.
A well-known tipster, Smart Pikachu, has shared details that two of the major Chinese smartphone makers are testing LOFIC for telephoto lenses, while remaining silent on names. However, the tipster gave a hint in posts with tags that mentioned Huawei Pura 90.
Lateral overflow integration capacitor (LOFIC) is a specialized structure for CMOS image sensors for high dynamic range photography. This structure enables the phone makers to improve the image output and color composition over the conventional camera module structure.
By using the external capacitor to store “overflow” electrons, the capacity of the pixel is massively increased without physically expanding the photodiode itself. It results in bright scenes without pixels becoming pure white due to the light’s collision and intensity.

In low-light conditions, the sensor ignores the big capacitor and focuses on the photodiode. It translates even the tiniest number of electrons into a large voltage. This conversion efficiency minimizes noise and improves light-intake in dark environments instead of grainy compositions.
The Huawei P-series has been the landmark of mobile photography since the P10 era. The company continues to push camera advancements to the next level with innovations under the Pura brand.
Last year, Huawei introduced a dual switchable telephoto camera system, offering near and long range with exceptional photo quality. However, implementing LOFIC to this system will add the missing pieces of the puzzle in those long-distance shots that are not easy to achieve with a regular camera setup.
Usually, Huawei sells high-end upgrades with its top-notch models. If this is true, Huawei is likely to bring them first for the Huawei Pura 90 Pro models.
Traditionally, Huawei launches the Pura flagship in the first half of the year. Therefore, the Pura 90 series will also be unveiled in this timeframe.
