Counterpoint has released a new report based on the global smartphone average RAM technology in 2025, and Huawei has appeared in the top ten brands ranking – thanks to its 12GB to 16GB RAM option for regular devices.
Memory capacity has been the “most-discussed” topic in the smartphone world. Why? The particular spec could witness a huge rise in its price in the coming years.
The new report shows that the memory’s share is rising sharply in the Bill of Materials (BoM). It was 10% for iPhone 17 Pro Max in 2025 compared to 8% for iPhone 12 Pro Max in 2020. The average RAM has hit 8.4GB last year.
Research Director Tarun Pathak noted that Apple is gradually increasing memory for its handsets. The reason behind this sluggish move is reliance on software optimization to offset lower DRAM capacity. Although it has now begun making progress.
On the other hand, Huawei smartphone products have recorded the highest average RAM capacity in December 2025, driven by its focus on the premium segment featuring a 12GB RAM option in China.
Counterpoint said that spec upgrades are a prime strategy for Chinese brands that helps them to maintain their market share. Keeping this point in mind, Huawei now offers 12GB to 16GB of DRAM as “standard” across its flagship models.

In December 2025, the average memory capacity of high-end devices has reached 11GB. Perhaps, the brands will continue to use the 12GB memory in 2026 to meet the demands of intensive multitasking and local tasks of LLMs in standard phones.
Research Director MS Hwang said:
“OEMs are adapting to memory shortages by shifting to LPDDR5 chipsets, reducing memory content, or adjusting product mixes. As memory is a passive component tied to processors, demand will quickly migrate once low-cost LPDDR5 chipsets become widely available.”
