Huawei launched the industry’s first “Smart Grip” feature with the Mate 80 series phone, but do you know the technical theory behind it and why it has become the first of its kind? Well, the company itself unraveled the mystery after four months!
Smart Grip allows users to easily swap the call buttons on the notification banner to their thumb. It lets you quickly access these call buttons with simple adjustments of their positions based on your grip of the phone.
But how does this feature actually work? What has Huawei used to form this unique and useful capability for smartphone users? Gladly, we now have the answers.
Richard Yu, the senior official and the Chairman of Consumer Business at Huawei, shared a new video today, revealing the tech theory of the Smart Grip phone feature.
The executive shed light on the principles behind the Smart Grip function. Yu mentioned that it’s not easy to detect someone’s grip and maintain a balance between their gestures on the phone and communication, though Huawei did it!
Yu said the Smart Grip feature is meant to quickly identify which hand a user is using to grip their phone – thanks to several sensors that make this operation possible.
Smart Grip: Principles
Many smartphones use antennas to enhance network signals. But when a user picks up their phone, some of these antennas are blocked, ruining the signal strength. Another factor that blocks these sensors is the style of gripping the handset.
However, Huawei acknowledged this problem and achieved the perfect fusion of various sensor data within milliseconds for the first time in the industry. In addition, the company has used self-made AI components and algorithms for the new feature, helping it determine the hand holding the phone within a second.
This is how the entire Huawei Smart Grip feature works.
