Huawei and other companies are launching large battery phones in China, but users still need power banks to charge different devices, and recently, the Chinese tech giant, along with Xiaomi and other major companies, has formed the strictest safety standards for these battery devices to ensure user well-being.
On Wednesday, China’s first national mandatory standard, “Safety Technical Specifications for Portable Power Bank,” made its debut. These standards are drafted jointly with China’s Electronics Technology Standardization Institute and 30 leading firms, including Huawei, CATL, Lenovo, Xiaomi, Oppo, Anker, Ugreen, and more.
Here are some of the tests and requirements that new Power Banks must pass.
Needle penetration test
A 4mm diameter steel needle will puncture the geometric center of a fully charged battery cell at a speed of 20+1mm/s and stay inside for 5 minutes. To pass this test, the battery cell must not catch fire or create leakage.
Temperature and other tests
The high temperature endurance is increased to around 135 degree celcius for 60 minutes. On the other hand, the overcharge test voltage has been increased to 1.4 times the rated voltage. Meanwhile, new mechanical safety tests, such as drop, pressure, and impact-resistant, are also added in the test process.
Recycling
Companies will no longer use recycled or refurbished battery cells in new products. The electrolyte water content is reduced to 20ppm and HF content to less than 100ppm. Manufacturers must mention the safe service life, OEM, and battery materials on the product. They must also do safety testing after cycle aging.
Once implemented, non-compliant power banks will no longer be manufactured. However, this new safety standard is expected to increase the prices of these products by up to 30%. On the bright side, this will reduce the cheap and low-quality power banks from the market and provide users with high safety and quality while charging their devices.
