Xiaomi is planning to make software update installation much easier than ever before with the HyperOS 3.1 upgrade. The company is now working on a special core firmware system called “SOTA” that will optimize the update installing setup.
SOTA refers to Super-OTA. This new update infrastructure will aim to transform all bulky patches + app updates that often require reboots, into a single package.
Why this new change? Xiaomi identified that users become frustrated when a new update pops up on the notification panel and the phone or tablet begins the reboot process to adapt to the new software version.
This step is important so that the phone can self-optimize and avoid any issues after the installation. Although it often results in hindering the ongoing operations.
As a result, the company has reportedly designed a new architecture that will ease the update installation process, starting with the upcoming HyperOS 3.1 build. Let’s understand the term SOTA and its benefits.
The SOTA updates will appear with ending terms like C05 or C06. This particular addition shows that the system apps and core modules of the device are updated. If the number doesn’t change, the smartphone won’t reboot.

SOTA update builds will download and install in the background without pushing the phone to reboot. It will not interrupt the user’s ongoing tasks or important stuff.
In case your phone is updated, but still an SOTA update is pending, the device’s system will highlight a gray notification for the supplementary patch on the screen.
What SOTA will include?
It will carry all system software and critical system apps in a single package. The device system will store this package in a specific folder “downloaded_xms”.
Besides, the device will accept these files directly as a software update and make the overall installation much easier, quicker, and more convenient for users. It will further fix bugs faster than ever. Users can directly install a small SOTA package with relevant fixes, solving the issue in no time!
