Huawei has no competition so far when it comes to variable aperture but it looks like Samsung is considering “reintroduction” of this imaging part to its phones in order to challenge the 2026 Apple and Huawei flagships in the consumer market.
ETNews reported that Samsung is making efforts to reopen the chapter of ‘variable aperture’ technology for its devices, rivaling Huawei Pura 90 and iPhone 18 series.
Samsung was the first to introduce the “variable aperture” concept. The company used it with the Galaxy S9 and S10 series in 2018 and 2019, respectively. But the firm dropped the support of this imaging part over thickness + cost concerns.
Though Huawei introduced the specific tech with the Mate 50 series in 2022 and never looked back. The Chinese tech giant continued to use it for adjusting the amount of light reaching the camera sensor. As a result, users witness less exposure during the day and more light at night.
Apple will likely adopt the variable aperture technology this year for both iPhone 18 Pro models. The company hasn’t used this imaging tech before, but it may use the ultimate technology this year.
In response to Apple’s move, Samsung may finally reintroduce variable aperture to Galaxy phones. The report says the company is requesting the development of variable aperture from multiple camera module partners.
Suppliers like Samsung Electro-Mechanics and MCNEX have reportedly begun producing variable aperture samples and supplying them to the South Korean firm.
One of the industry insiders said:
“The new variable aperture technology to be applied to the Galaxy smartphones is still in the early stages of development. While the final inclusion of variable aperture technology has not been confirmed, we understand that Samsung Electronics is strongly committed to using it.”
While Samsung has been relying on the camera megapixels and software system to enhance the depth and brightness of shots, things seem vague without the use of a physical variable aperture.
Adding more insights, the industry insider said that the smartphone camera tech competition appeared to have cooled down in the past few months. Though Samsung’s step of reintroducing variable aperture tech could stimulate it to the next level!
