Anthropic – an American AI company, is on the verge of facing a Huawei-like US ban. The President of the United States has recently announced a few regulations against the artificial intelligence startup, calling it a major supply chain risk to security.
Anthropic is an American artificial intelligence startup company founded in 2021 by some former OpenAI employees. It primarily focuses on making reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. It aims to create AI that benefits humanity.
In the current scenario, the American AI company is at risk of going through a Huawei-like US ban. The story began when the Defense Department labelled the company as a risk to national security, a mark that the US gave to Huawei in 2019.
“Supply chain risk to national security” – that’s what the defense secretary, Pet Hegseth, said about Anthropic. Following this statement, the US has ordered every federal agency to halt using the technological products of this AI firm.
The story began earlier this week when the Defense Department revealed a deadline for Anthropic. It said that let the Pentagon use Claude however it wants or lose the company’s nearly $200 million government contract.
However, Anthropic refused the proposal, insisting that its AI tools should not go for mass surveillance or a fully autonomous weapons system that can lead to disasters without human oversight.
While the Pentagon’s point suggested that it has no interest in using AI for such purposes, the Defense Department Secretary, Hegseth, stated a demand for full unrestricted access to Anthropic’s AI model and even accused the AI firm of placing “Silicon Valley ideology above American lives”.
On new allegations, Anthropic counterattacked by saying that it will now challenge the “risk” label in court, as the tag is legally unsound and has never publicly applied to an American firm. It added:
“No amount of intimidation or punishment from the Department of War will change our position on mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.”
