China Unicom has recently announced very significant news regarding the eSIM support for smartphones, and the Xiaomi 17 series is a part of this announcement. Perhaps we will soon see more eSIM-powered devices in the Chinese market.
General Manager of Device Sales Department at China Unicom – Chen Li, announced that a new eSIM smartphone will debut every month, starting from this year.
On January 23, China Unicom launched its first eSIM phone – the Honor Magic 8 Pro Air. During the event, the company announced the eSIM support for more smartphones, including Xiaomi 17 Satellite Version and Vivo handsets.
The chief noted that the eSIM phone users are generally those that needs high-data everyday. After the Mate 80 RS release, the HarmonyOS eSIM phone users jumped by 73%, with data plans of 50GB and even more!
Meanwhile, the Android eSIM smartphone users is 50% with data plans of 80GB or more. Apple has an eSIM phone user base of 43%. That shows eSIM is becoming a new trend in the market, giving more choices to users for communication.
Following this craze, Chen Li said that brands like Honor, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Samsung will be launching eSIM phones this year. Thus, there would be at least one new eSIM device every month in the market in 2026.

Chen Li said:
“A new eSIM phone will be launched every month in 2026, with at least one new model per month. eSIM phones will fully cover the three major mobile OS ecosystems and all mainstream mobile phone brands.”
DigitalChatStation further revealed that the Xiaomi 17 series won’t have a satellite edition anytime soon. Although it will soon get eSIM support in the coming months.
It’s unclear how the company will make eSIM support possible for the Xiaomi 17 phones. Though we may soon get more revelations on this subject.
