Xiaomi is ready to introduce its new-gen Xiaomi 17 Ultra smartphone next week, and it is going to be the first product to feature a Leica APO zoom camera. It will also bring a 1-inch main camera that will boost the overall image and video quality.
Lu Weibing – the President of Xiaomi Group announced that Xiaomi 17 Ultra is coming with an iconic Leica APO zoom camera to rival top-end 2025 flagships.
The first target in this challenge could be the Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max. It comes with an enhanced dual zoom camera setup that offers some really amazing macro shots.
During an online video interaction, Lu revealed that Xiaomi and Leica recently planned to redefine their imaging strategies. Some of these useful changes will also be visible with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra like new optics and Coke-like Leica logo.
“Xiaomi 17 Ultra is the first product under this new collaboration model. Together, we have brought a new generation of 1-inch main camera sensor and Leica APO telephoto lens designed specifically for mobile imaging.”

Lu said this is a next-gen optical system solution that brings revolutionary innovation to night image quality and macro creative experience, and puts mobile imaging optics at an extraordinary new starting point.
APO refers to Apochromatic technology. Under this technique, the sensor uses a special glass element to bring three colors of light (red, green, blue) to the same focal point. It further reduces color fringing for sharper, clearer, and more vibrant shots.
On the other hand, the Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max uses dual telephoto lenses. The 4x zoom lens offers a minimum focus distance of 5cm and delivers perfect zooming shots without any compromise with the image or video quality.
It would be worth seeing if Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s Leica APO lens will actually defeat Mate 80 Pro Max in the zoom camera battle.
