The Huawei Mate 80 series has an all-metal body that is unique and strong, but its dual-ring design is the main highlight. When held vertically, it forms an “8” number-like shape, and once turned horizontally, it looks like a symbol of “infinity.”
These symbolic traits were difficult to achieve, according to a Huawei device design team member. It is revealed that the material splicing in the dual-ring area was the biggest challenge that the team has encountered so far.
A designer said that the unified material combination is actually the result of more than 100 rounds of color gradient adjustments. For the dual-ring design, Huawei used aluminum alloy and fiberglass combined, creating a challenge for maintaining visual consistency.
The same light source sits at the center of this challenge; different materials exhibit varying diffuse reflections, which also makes it very difficult to achieve a consistent color effect.

To overcome these complex design traits, the design team has collaborated with device production experts to polish the ring by layering oxides and continuously adjusting the ratios, eventually achieving a synergy between the two rings. This fusion creates a metallic finish while enabling wireless charging.
The metal areas have “photolithography-level precision” to create “photopainted metal”. The designers draw inspiration from wafer manufacturing, which “photopaints” precise textures at the nanoscale, enabling the metal to exhibit delicate, ever-changing light and shadow effects, just like glass.
That’s how Huawei designers have formed the unique dual-ring design for the Mate 80 Pro Max and other models.
