Huawei is sparking speculations to minimize the 3D Face Recognition sensor for the upcoming flagship phones. If true, it would be a prominent change in the selfie camera part. But the question is, which lineup will bring this shift in 2026?
DigitalChatStation said that a forward-looking development is underway. One of the top five phone makers is now testing a smaller version of the ToF 3D Face Recognition.
This implementation will eventually reduce the size of the front-facing lens cutout, giving more space to the screen dimensions and a wider viewing panel to users.
While the leaker didn’t mention the brand’s name, netizens speculated it to be Huawei. Notably, Honor and Huawei are the only tech giants to use 3D Face Recognition technology for their flagship phones, like Magic and Mate smartphones.
Even though Huawei offers a subtle position and size to the selfie camera snapper, the idea to minimize the 3D Face Recognition sensor for phones could have certain benefits! Particularly, for those who prioritize a large display handset.

Firstly, you get a more modern aesthetic on the device, offering a cleaner and clutter-free look compared to those phones with larger notches or big pill cutouts.
Secondly, a device with a minimized 3D Face Recognition sensor will bring an unobstrusive feel and a larger + immersive display with minimal obstruction. Thus, improving the experience for video watching, gaming, and browsing.
Huawei is seemingly planning the adoption of 3D Face Recognition for the 2026 Pura lineup. Although it’s unlikely to see the size change with the upcoming series.
Perhaps the company may introduce this ToF sensor size upgrade with the Mate 90 series, coming in the second half of this year. This news is still uncertain. Hence, it is better to take it with a grain of salt for the moment.
