Huawei has been considering rolling out the HarmonyOS NEXT upgrade to the Mate 40 Pro, and a leak reveals that the work has already started on this matter. However, things are not always as they appear to be! And here’s a big twist in this case.
A video on Bilibili reveals that Huawei Mate 40 Pro is running HarmonyOS NEXT. It is working extremely smoothly, and the version is based on OpenHarmony 4.1.
Momoi UP master showed how fluently the Mate 40 Pro was working after installing HarmonyOS NEXT. He revealed the newly designed UI, including the search center, Quick Settings, revamped weather app, and smoother animations.
Per the video caption, the device belongs to a third-party brand system test unit and not the official Huawei store. And thus, the new version is working due to the unlocked bootloader.
The company is currently using the OpenHarmony 6.1. Hence, the 4.1 build is an old version. Many Mate 40 Pro smartphone users were happy after seeing this video, as they had been expecting a major software upgrade for a long while.

But here comes the catch!
Following the video leak, many netizens began questioning the accuracy of this testing upgrade. In response, a credible tipster @Superdimensional said that it’s FAKE.
According to the tipster, the device is a standard retail Mate 40 Pro. It has a low-level bootloader, which was unlocked through a hack, as mentioned in the video caption.
This means the “bootloader unlocked” hack helped the tipster to allow the installation of an unofficial software system – a custom port based on Huawei OpenHarmony 4.1, developed by independent developers.
The Mate 40 Pro testing device is not an internal engineering unit from the official company, but from a third-party OEM. It lacks official support for the HarmonyOS NEXT upgrade and is suffering from extremely poor stability.
Huawei once said that it is considering a HarmonyOS 5.0 upgrade for the Mate 40 Pro. But an official announcement is still missing on this subject. Let us see if things change with the HarmonyOS 7.0 debut.
