With the release of the Mate 80 series, Huawei introduced a new variant called the “Pro Max” smartphone and has stepped down from the “Pro+” model, which raises a question of whether we’ll take the same step for the Pura 90 series?
Instead of continuing the Pro+ model, the Huawei Mate 80 smartphone welcomed a new member this time – the Pro Max variant. Whether it was a new market strategy or a “following suit” move is still a mystery to be resolved!
Following suit refers to Xiaomi’s step, where it jumped directly to the 17th smartphone series, skipping an entire generation, and replicated the name of the iPhone 17 lineup.
In Huawei’s case, the move has proved quite beneficial as the Mate 80 Pro Max became a show-stealer device in the market right after its launch. It even went out of stock in seconds in its first sale, as of which the OEM extended the shipment time.
And this successful treatment has now sparked discussions if the Huawei Pura 90 series will also bring a Pro Max variant instead of the traditional Pro+ model.
Weibo tipster @GuoJing has also mentioned that Huawei will launch four Pura 90 models: standard, Pro, Pro Max, and the Ultra version in the second quarter of 2026.

The tipster further hinted that the alleged Pura 90 Pro Max and Ultra will bring Mate 80 Pro Max and RS Ultimate Design screens, respectively. It seems the 2026 Pura lineup may also feature 8000 nits screen brightness.
Switching from the Pro+ version to a Pro Max handset is not a bad idea, though. Along with the name, the company has also upgraded the internal specifications of the high-end Mate 80 Pro smartphone, making it a real “MAX” handset.
The company might also bring a similar treatment to the Pura 90 lineup. Note that there is no confirmation on this topic yet. Hence, we’ve to wait for some more details before jumping to conclusions.
