It seems Huawei is prepping the return of its most unique camera setup – a retractable lens with the Pura 90 Ultra. New information suggests the company could adopt new teleconverter sensors for the 2026 Pura smartphone lineup, alongside significant imaging upgrades.
SmartPikachu stated that the Huawei Pura 90 Ultra is still testing a 1-inch periscope zoom camera with a 200MP sensor. In addition, the company is seeking to add new teleconverters and multispectral lenses to the flagship smartphone.
Here, a teleconverter can refer to two major aspects. The first one is that the company is testing a specialized photography kit for the Pura 90 Ultra handset.
The next option is that Huawei could bring back the concept of a retractable camera lens for the Pura 90 Ultra, similar to the Pura 70 Ultra. The idea has been liked by many customers as it gives a professional look to the entire device.
As the company skipped this addition with the Pura 80 Ultra, it’s unclear if it will really adopt the retractable camera mechanism with the upcoming flagship phone.

However, Huawei might have new plans this time. It is already reportedly up with a 200MP zoom camera for the first time. Perhaps the OEM may give this sensor more depth with a retractable lens, cause that’s the only way to integrate a teleconverter in a device.
What is a teleconverter?
A teleconverter camera or a lens accessory is an optical device that fits onto an existing smartphone camera lens to magnify the image, effectively increasing the overall focal length. It’s a kind of special attachment that lets you take closer and more detailed shots without using the digital zoom that reduces image quality.
Apart from the Huawei Pura 90 Ultra, the iPhone 18 Pro is also in rumors to use a teleconverter lens. Let’s wait for some more time to see if these brands really turn this leak into reality for their new creations.
