Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max/RS can get surprising selfie camera upgrade

Huawei could upgrade the selfie camera on its upcoming flagship series models – Mate 90 Pro Max and RS Ultimate. According to a new leak, the tech giant is exploring some incredible imaging elements to elevate the photography experience with the new Mate handsets.

SmartPikachu recently shared the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max and RS variants‘ camera system details, including the selfie lens. It says that the company is looking for a “major” front-facing camera upgrade for the high-end models.

The tipster didn’t disclose the parameters of the new selfie snapper. But many early rumors suggested that the company is working on a significant front lens upgrade and may introduce it with future devices.

Per the previous reports, Huawei has been testing a 1:1 square selfie sensor for the Nova 16 series. However, the official product page reveals the same 50MP ultra-wide selfie shooter for photos and video shooting features along with a multispectral lens.

The first 1:1 selfie camera device was the iPhone 17 with an 18MP front-facing sensor. Since the lens follows the square format, it automatically adjusts the framing and widens the original shot as more people enter the frame.

Huawei was expected to use this significant upgrade with the Nova 16 series. But the company didn’t do so. Instead, it launched the mid-ranger with a 50MP camera coupled with a color reproduction lens.

As of now, Huawei is once again in the news for using a prominent selfie lens for the high-end Mate 90 models. Whether it will actually introduce a 1:1 imaging format or stick to the same lens with certain optimizations is unclear at present.
