Huawei Ascend 950PR is the new-gen AI chip that has debuted with the Atlas 350 accelerator card. It currently sits atop the Ascend processors for its efficient performance, and here’s everything you need to know about this AI semiconductor.
Despite the ongoing tech tensions between the US and China, Huawei has made huge strides in the AI industry since 2023. And in the current state, the company is up with a huge plan to overcome certain bottlenecks it has been facing for years.
Well, the Ascend 950PR AI chip is a part of this new strategy. The chipset debuted last week, showing excellent properties over its strongest rival in the AI race – NVIDIA.
The Ascend 950PR AI processor debuted at the China Partner Conference 2026, packed in the Atlas 350 card. It’s not only a new-gen Ascend chip but also the proof of Huawei’s constant efforts in the AI industry to free China from US tech rules.
Huawei Ascend 950PR: Characteristics
Ascend 950PR uses the same die architecture as the original Ascend 950. Yet, it is fundamentally stronger in multiple aspects compared to the previous versions.
Besides, the Ascend 950OR chip is mainly designed for better prefill and recommendation workloads. It offers 2.87x compute performance over the Nvidia H20.
Huawei stated that the prefill stage of inference and recommendation algorithms is compute-intensive, with higher demand for parallel computing and lower demand for memory access bandwidth. It requires a layered memory solution that ensures both components don’t need huge amounts of local memory.
Therefore, the company has introduced the Ascend 950PR chip. Due to its HiBL 1.0 and low-cost HBM (which is more cost-effective than HBM3E and HBM4E), Ascend 950PR can help customers maintain the right level of performance.
In addition, it will significantly reduce customers’ investment in the hardware needed for prefill and recommendation systems. Moreover, the 950PR is the only AI chip in China to feature FP4 low-precision inference.
Huawei has said to unveil this chipset officially in the first quarter of this year. Perhaps it will soon be available to push it to clients. You can check more details below:
