Huawei has seemingly started working on 2026 Mate smartphones, and in the current landscape, the company is testing a redesigned quad-camera setup for the Mate 90 Pro Max. Perhaps the firm will use such a solution that can help it withstand pricing challenges.
As noted by the Weibo tipster @SmartPikachu, Huawei is evaluating a newly designed four-camera setup for the Mate 90 Pro Max. And the special part of this “internal” imaging framework is that it uses three layers of stacking.
In simple words, it’s a 3-layer stacked CMOS imaging sensor design. This technique shows a fusion of three different yet functional layers into one sensor chipset.
Together, these layers improve the overall shutter speed and image quality of the camera, compared to other 2-layer imaging lenses. Here, these three layers could be as follows:
- Pixel Section or back-illuminated structure for capturing the light effectively.
- Circuit Section that processes signals and data from the pixels.
- DRAM Section, which is a temporary storage memory for the image data segment with a high-speed buffer.

Notably, the three-layer imaging setup enables 4 times faster pixel data reading, reduces shutter distortion, and minimizes noise. Thus, enhancing the low-light performance to a great extent.
As per the tipster, Huawei is adopting this new camera tech adjustment in favor of “price control” for its upcoming flagship phones. While many brands are increasing rates for even existing models, the Mate phone maker aims to manage this situation through refined solutions as per material cost.
The company has already mentioned that even though it is trying its best to maintain the price and offer the best device experience, it could go with the “price increase” pattern in the future if the memory shortage persists.
