If you are someone who feels unsafe sharing their phone numbers just to maintain a connection, then WhatsApp is bringing the new usernames feature for you. The capability will enable you to connect with others without sharing your personal number.
WhatsApp is introducing the Usernames feature that will allow users to just share their main name on their WhatsApp profile instead of their original phone number.
It’s a simple way to keep your phone number private. People will be able to connect with you on WhatsApp through your username instead of saving your contact.
Starting this week, the company will let you reserve your username in the chat application. After reserving once, you can use it later, when WhatsApp completely releases this feature to all of its versions.
Choosing a username in WhatsApp is similar to picking one on Instagram or on Gmail. The chat app will further help to pick a good name with the help of a username generator.
The company is also bringing a special option for creators, small businesses, and organizations to directly claim their existing username on Instagram or Facebook.
WhatsApp says:
“Usernames are our latest step to make WhatsApp even more private. There’s no directory to browse and no suggestions – people will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time. There’s also an optional username key that others will need to message you.”
Note that the feature is still unavailable. One can reserve their optional username by opening WhatsApp and going to Settings > Account > Username.
