Huawei is planning to expand its 3D Face Recognition tech to the Pura line, and we may witness this capability with the Pura 90 series next year. Since users have been expecting this change for a while, it could become a reality in 2026!
SmartPikachu noted that Huawei is testing a new unlocking method for the Pura 90 series, and of course, there is a chance that it can be the 3D Face Recognition.
The company introduced 3D Face Recognition in 2018 with the old flagship Mate 20 Pro. It used to be packed inside the notch look. Over time, the firm has changed this appearance from a pill-shaped structure to the three-punch hole design.
Notably, the feature has only debuted with the Mate smartphones to date. The P/Pura or Nova models remained on the 2D Face Recognition for unlocking the device.

2D Face Recognition: It uses 2D mapping and captures facial data via the standard front camera. Being a two-dimensional tech, it can easily be spoofed with a realistic photo or video. It’s not safe or secure either.
3D Face Recognition: Unlike the traditional method, the 3D tech uses a dot projector and infrared sensor to shoot a detailed 3D map of the user’s face. It is more secure than the two-dimensional capability and works even in dim light.
The tipster didn’t mention if the Pura 90 series will feature the 3D Facial Recognition. However, the company has been in the news since last year to implement this advanced system into the Pura smartphones in the near future.
Hence, we can expect to see this major change with the Pura 90 series. In addition, Huawei may also bring some dynamic selfie camera upgrades this time.
It would be interesting to see if the Pura 90 series smartphones introduce any upgrades in terms of design.
