Ascend AI chips launch in Latin America is under consideration: Huawei

Huawei plans to introduce its Ascend AI chips in Latin America, a senior company official confirms. After gaining significant ground in the Chinese semiconductor market, the OEM is considering expanding its Ascend chipset line to more regions.

In an interview with SCMP, Mark Chen – the President of Huawei Cloud Latin America, said that the company is looking to push its Ascend AI chips in the respective market.

The chief said so after the Rio Web Summit (tech and innovation) in Brazil. Chen did not confirm a specific timeline to launch Huawei Ascend processors in Latin America.

As per the President, the Ascend 950 series is still in its early stages of deployment in China. Hence, the time for bringing it to other markets is unclear at present.

Chen mentioned that Huawei’s AI plans for Latin America are bigger than just providing raw hardware. It aims to sell access to models where customers pay for the computing in the form of tokens. The firm sells small computing clusters to Brazil and Mexico, complying with strict data policies.

Latin America is an innovative region, as its cloud adoption is higher than in many other markets. Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina also offer a deep pool of technically capable engineers. This is the reason Huawei wants to sell its AI chips here.

Mark Chen said:

“They try our cloud service in small size, they build the trust, then automatically they will deploy more workloads, because we have the best support as well as the cost.”

Despite the US restrictions, Huawei managed to regain its chip tech potential and launched the Ascend 950 series in China earlier this year. The first AI SoC debuted in March (950PR), and firms like Alibaba, ByteDance, and DeepSeek began using it.

Huawei Ascend has become a prominent alternative in China to Nvidia’s AI processors. It can now handle inference, training, and running large AI models like DeepSeek V4 series. Over the years, the company attained major wins in the AI industry.

Following these achievements, the company is bringing a new-gen chip series to the market – Ascend 950. After the PR version, Huawei is ready to unveil 950DT in August.

If not in 2026, Huawei may bring the new AI chipsets to Latin America in the coming years.
