GoPro Mission 1 series brings 50MP 1-inch sensor, 4K Open Gate, GP3 chipset


GoPro has unveiled its new Mission 1 series of cameras, bringing upgrades such as a larger 1-inch type sensor, a new GP3 processor, and support for interchangeable MFT lenses. The lineup consists of the Mission 1, Mission 1 Pro, and the Mission 1 Pro ILS.

All three models are equipped with a new 50MP 1-inch type sensor, said to capture more light than those used in previous generations.

The cameras are powered by a new 5nm GP3 processor, enabling video recording capabilities such as 1080p at 960fps, 8K at 60fps and 30fps, 4K 120fps Open Gate, and 4K at 240fps, among others.

GoPro says the new chipset also integrates an upgraded AI NPU for improved video processing and enhanced low-light performance. The cameras are backed by a new Enduro 2 battery, which is claimed to deliver over 5 hours of recording at 1080p30 and more than 3 hours at 4K30 on a single charge.

The Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro feature an upgraded case with up to 20 meters of waterproofing. The lineup also includes a larger rear OLED display, redesigned buttons, and a new lens with a 159-degree field of view.

Audio has also been improved with a four-microphone setup and support for 32-bit float recording. Additional features include Bluetooth 5.3, HLG HDR, 10-bit color with GP-Log2, Timecode Sync, up to 240Mbps bitrate, and support for 50MP photos.

The Mission 1 Pro will also be offered in a Grip Edition, which includes a metal case for added durability, along with cold shoe mounts, a magnetic latch mount, and mounting fingers.

Meanwhile, the Mission 1 Pro ILS introduces an interchangeable lens system with support for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lenses and adapters.

Alongside the new cameras, GoPro has also announced a new wireless microphone system compatible with its Hero Black cameras, as well as smartphones and DSLRs.

GoPro has also introduced a range of accessories for the Mission 1 series, including a new Media Mod, M-series ND filters, protective housing, Volta 2 battery grip, Light Mod 2, a dual-battery charger for the Enduro 2 battery, and a vertical mount adapter.

Pricing for the Mission 1 series has yet to be announced, but pre-orders will begin on May 21. The Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro will go on sale globally from May 28, while the Mission 1 Pro ILS and the Creator and Ultimate Creator Editions of the Mission 1 Pro are slated to arrive in Q3 this year.
