Huawei could use 200MP self-developed main camera for Mate 90

Huawei Mate 90 series is in the development phase, and the company could use a self-developed 200MP main camera for this flagship alongside cutting-edge imaging technologies. A new piece of information is shedding light on the camera system of the 2026 Mate smartphones.

Mate 90 series is expected to go official in September this year. As we are approaching the possible timeline, more specifications of the flagship began surfacing.

Weibo tipster @SmartPikachu reported that the Chinese tech giant is working on a new self-developed 200MP main camera, probably for the Huawei Mate 90 series.

The company launched its first 200MP camera phone in April this year – the Pura 90 Pro Max. It features a massive periscope zoom lens that delivers superior telephoto performance, producing clear and transparent images.

It is further linked with a 20x telephoto video zoom capability that can easily shoot clearer and more detailed video recordings irrespective of lighting and distance conditions.

Now the tech giant is reportedly readying a 200MP self-developed main lens. Early rumors suggested that Huawei is working on its customized camera sensors. Though it hasn’t used them yet. Perhaps the OEM has saved this tech for Mate 90 phones.

Apart from the self-made 200MP lens, Huawei is also testing a 50MP primary camera paired with optimized variable aperture. If the current leak turns out to be true, the tech giant may use a 50MP main lens for the standard and Mate 90 Pro, while the 200MP one for Pro Max and RS Ultimate variants.

The leak adds that Huawei will use a 7000mAh battery for the Mate 90 series. It has already introduced a massive cell pack with the Nova 16 models. Now, it may bring a similar or slightly larger capacity for the upcoming flagship phones.
