Huawei says Chinese AI models are just 2.7% behind US in performance

Huawei has revealed the curtain on another important piece of news that says the Chinese AI models are just 2.7% behind the US technologies regarding the overall performance. Perhaps these AI-powered tech solutions won’t take much time to approach the global-level potential and advancements.

The CTO of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., Financial Systems Department – Zheng Jun delivered a keynote at the 2026 Phoenix Bay Area Financial Forum and Financial Summit today and mentioned some major milestones coming in the future.

Zheng firstly revealed that the Huawei Mate 90 series Kirin chipsets will reach close to the 3nm process technology this year, all thanks to the new chip design concept.

Secondly, the Huawei executive revealed that the gap between the Chinese and the US-based AI models is now very small. According to the latest report from Stanford University, China is just 2.7% behind American technology in the AI LLM field.

“The overall level of Chinese AI models lags behind the US by only 2.7%, and its overall strength is approaching international advanced levels.”

In addition, the CTO of Huawei mentioned that since February 2026, the use of Chinese models has consistently outpaced that of American models, mainly due to two factors:

  • The capabilities of Chinese open-source models have improved significantly. It is inching closer to the level of closed-source models in the US.
  • Using China’s infrastructure, coupled with advantages in computing power and power resources, the Chinese AI model has stronger price-economic advantages.
