On April 28, State Council Information Office hosted a press event where the MIIT announced that the open-source HarmonyOS-powered smartphones have exceeded 55 million as of the end of March 2026, marking a new win for the company.
Ke Jixin – the Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said that China-made software systems are a whole new thing in the present scenario, and the best example is HarmonyOS with more than 55 million smartphones.
Jixin added that Chinese tech makers are producing completely different and prominent software versions from what it was a few years ago, particularly for apps and services.
Companies like Huawei are constantly improving their open-source software versions not only for consumers but also for commercial use, making it easier and smoother.
He announced:
“As of the end of March, the total number of mobile phones equipped with the open-source HarmonyOS operating system had exceeded 55 million units.”
During the Pura 90 series launch event, Huawei Consumer Business Group’s Chairman – Richard Yu announced that its self-developed and Android-free HarmonyOS 6.0 devices have surpassed the “55 million unit” mark. The exact figure is 56.255 million.
In the past couple of years, Huawei has significantly enhanced its mobile OS. The company added many advancements, making its software much better than iOS and Android.
On the other hand, the company expanded the self-made operating system not only to smart cars or smart home products, but also to PCs, AI data centers, and IT infrastructures. No doubt, the new changes in the OS will bring more benefits for devices.
