Honor has now revealed the accuracy of a smartwatch in body temperature. One of the company’s executives said that no wearable in the industry is currently capable of giving precise results related to the temperature of the human body.
Guo Tongxue, the All-Scenario Product Manager at Honor, recently shared its plans for a new smartwatch targeting young people. He asked his users what kind of characteristics they care about and would like to see in the upcoming wearable.
Following the post, a Weibo tipster mentioned seeing a body temperature feature with the new Honor smartwatch. To this suggestion, the Product Manager replied:
“To answer this question, currently, smartwatches in the industry cannot accurately detect body temperature. […] It’s believed that this industry challenge will be solved in the near future.”
According to the chief, there are two major reasons why smartwatches are unable to record the precise body temperature. Guo mentioned that the wearables have an algorithmic conversion between skin temperature and core body temperature.
Perhaps this conversion is quite complex when there’s a fever and making it impossible to control the reading within ±0.5°C. Thus, one can’t expect precise readings.
Besides, the watch’s accuracy is often affected by ambient temperature changes, wearing tightness, and activity levels, leading to inaccurate readings.
Thus, the current smartwatches in the industry are perfect for menstrual cycle monitoring. But they cannot achieve medical-grade body temperature detection capabilities.
However, the chief mentioned that as we approach new technologies in the time ahead, we can expect the industry to solve this problem soon. Still, it’s unclear how much time things will take to fit right in this segment.
After this response, the tipster mentioned that several brands claim to have the body temperature feature in their wearables, and apart from being fun, it is meaningful!
Yes, that’s a bit contradictory, as devices like the Huawei Watch GT series, the digital series (Watch 3/4/5), Ultimate Design, and the medical-certified wearable – Watch D/D2 offer body temperature function.
On the other hand, brands like Apple and Samsung also support this feature for their wearables. Thus, Huawei and some foreign tech vendors prove Honor wrong at this point. It would be worth seeing when Honor will introduce this feature to its smartwatches!
