Huawei Nova 16 series could debut one of the biggest visual changes that we haven’t seen for a while – a squarish front camera. The latest leak about the sub-flagship has sparked discussions on what the company is cooking for the selfie sensor.
As noted by DigitalChatStation, Huawei is currently testing a very unique type of front camera sensor for the Nova 16 series. The tipster mentioned that the company will likely implement this interesting lens in the top mid-range model.
Interestingly, Apple has used a square selfie camera on the iPhone 17 with an 18MP front-facing lens. It follows users and automatically adjusts the framing as well as widens the shot when more people enter the frame.
Even though the tipster didn’t reveal details about the new camera sensor, he said the lens has a 1:1 format, hinting that Huawei has bigger plans for Nova 16’s selfie lens.

Such selfie sensors can enable users to shoot photos and videos in both vertical and horizontal orientations without rotating the device. Also known as the open gate format, the square sensor offers more image data for flexible cropping.
Moreover, these sensors often set the image composition to 1:1, forming a perfect and clearer square-shaped photo frame instead of the large 4:3 format. It is perfect for a balanced and consistent look for portraits.
Since Huawei will likely use a bigger sensor than the iPhone 17’s 18MP, one can expect even higher resolution and better photo + video quality. The exact purpose of the specific purpose being tested is still unclear, but it’ll be known soon!
Apart from the selfie sensor, the tipster didn’t reveal any other details for the Huawei Nova 16 series. Though we can look forward to major imaging adjustments for this new lineup. Stay tuned.
