After robot phone, Honor plans a new smartphone approach

Honor is reportedly planning to collaborate with ByteDance as a part of its new smartphone-making approach. The Chinese tech giant could partner with the TikTok parent company to work on the Doubao phone. Let’s take a deep dive into this matter.

Doubao Phone is ByteDance’s native AI-powered smartphone, primarily in collaboration with ZTE. It comes with a special Doubao Mobile Assistant, directly integrated into Android. But it has certain limitations compared to other Android handsets.

Before cooperating with ZTE, ByteDance contacted Honor as the very first phone manufacturer for its own creation. Although at that time, the Magic device maker was cautious due to certain risk factors.

The Chinese OEM believed that deep system-level collaborations can lead to major challenges in terms of stability, compatibility, and security. It may trigger widespread functional abnormalities, resulting in user complaints every now and then.

Moreover, being a new device with such issues, the Duobao phone may not be able to make a large user base in the initial phase. However, it seems the ByteDance and Honor collaboration is once again taking shape as a new smartphone approach.

It’s not the first time that Honor and ByteDance will join hands over a new creation. The companies have cooperated many times in the AI field. Honor is the first brand in 2024 to use Duobao’s big AI model in its top-tier phones and introduced features like meeting minutes, copywriting generations, and more.

Last year, the President of Honor Flagship Product Line – Fang Fei, even said:

“Doubao phone assistant supports general scenarios and automatically executes tasks based on UI Agent, which is consistent with Honor AI’s development direction from specific tasks to general execution.”

Let’s see if the two parties really collaborate over a new smartphone in the time ahead or not!
