News about Huawei suggests that the European Commission is halting EU financial support for the Chinese OEM’s solar tech solutions. One of the sources recently shed light on this topic, revealing why this decision is important for now.
The European Commission is a political executive arm of the EU that works on proposing new laws, enforcing EU law, managing policies, and allocating funding.
In the current landscape, the European Commission has decided to block the EU funding for the Huawei solar tech solutions. The decision came out on Monday.
Here, the solar tech solutions refer to solar panel inverters. It turns solar panels’ electricity into current that flows into the grid. And Huawei is a champ in this sector.
Siobhan McGarry – a spokesperson of the European Commission, stated that the EU executive has decided to take concrete action right now against the risk of disruption of the EU’s critical infrastructure by foreign actors like Huawei and ZTE.
Adding more, Siobhan stated that the Commission will take a full and final decision by November 1 this year on whether to allow the projects of Huawei solar tech implementation to continue without restrictions.
But for now, it is obstructing the use of EU funds for projects involving those inverters from high-risk suppliers like China’s Huawei. And why not? The EU has always considered the Chinese firms a threat to its security, be it the 5G network or solar tech.
McGarry further noted:
“Risk posed by China’s companies in clean energy networks includes the manipulation of electricity production parameters, disturbance in electricity generation, and unauthorized access to operation data. Hence, things may lead to a remote shutdown… leading to countrywide blackouts.”
Since the Commission has mentioned foreign suppliers, firms not only from China, but also from Russia, North Korea, and Iran will be affected by this new decision. Although it’s more impactful for China, holding 80% of the global solar inverters market share.
