Huawei Mate 90 series could finally say goodbye to side-mounted fingerprint sensor this year, welcoming the ultrasonic technology. The latest information on this subject revealed that the company has started testing advanced unlock security technique.
SmartPikachu on Weibo mentioned that several devices are evaluating the all-new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and tagged the Huawei Mate 90 series in the same leak.
This indicates that the 2026 Mate flagship phones can eventually debut with the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, ditching the side-mounted phone lock scanner completely.

Notably, the Chinese tech giant has used the side-mounted fingerprint scanner for many phone generations to date. But this tech may reach an end this year, giving way to the under-display ultrasonic fingerprint technology with a better unlock experience.
A side-mounted fingerprint sensor is generally a capacitive, biometric security scanner attached to one side of the phone or directly integrated into the power button.
These sensors are fast and work well despite screen protectors as they are out of the screen – on the sides. Although it can be less convenient on large phones and skips the real use of the power button and often triggers accidental unlocks.
On the other hand, the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is an advanced biometric security tech that uses high-frequency sound waves to generate a detailed 3D image of a user’s fingerprint. This image has all ridges, valleys, and pores of the finger.
And the best part is – these sensors are reliable even if your finger is wet, dirty, or greasy, and are capable of scanning the skin’s dermal layer with higher accuracy and faster recognition compared to other sensors. Thus, it’s difficult to fool them around.
Besides the fingerprint sensor, the tipster hasn’t mentioned any other details on the Mate 90 series. Let’s wait to see if the company really brings the new tech solution this year.
